Mari -- Regardless of filter, consider settling your water overnite, with 1/2-1 t alum per 3-5 gal water to precipitate colloidal material. It will greatly reduce the frequency you must clean your filter (if you use a ceramic filter). The alum settles out with the particulates so there is no aftertaste. I have used this approach on a number of silty or muddy rivers (Green, Colorado) with several types of filters with good results.

When I went to Chile and down the Futaleufu, I used the MSR water filter. That was quite awhile ago, but it is probably still a bomb-proof system....might be a little slow however! I like the dromedary bags that go with the system.

I'm planning to boat the Colorado River (below Moab, UT)and am looking for a water filter that can handle silty water. I need a small system that can provide anough water for 2-4 people. I've looked at the filters at the local shops but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually used one. A small compact filter is important because we're going self-contained in kayaks. Mari
